Take your pick of the 22 Best Online Post-Master’s DNP programs in the country! Our rankings contain info on MSN to DNP concentrations, online & campus elements, admissions requirements, and overall reputation. Still have questions? Check out the practical advice section, with FAQs and tips on how to choose a distance learning DNP. A few extra points to note:
- DNP vs. Post-Graduate Certificate: For this ranking, we focused on MSN to DNP and Post-Master’s DNP pathways. But keep in mind that some schools will also offer Post-Graduate Certificates to MSN-holders who are seeking APRN certification and don’t care about earning a DNP.
- Online vs. Hybrid: Online MSN to DNP programs often contain campus components (e.g. initial orientation). To ensure that programs are convenient for working nurses who might live out-of-state, we had a “once or twice per semester” threshold for our rankings. If you were required to visit the campus more frequently than that, the school & program were regulated to our list of Honorary Hybrid Mentions.
- Online Delivery & COVID-19: To adjust to changing times, many Colleges of Nursing are converting their on-campus requirements into virtual ones (e.g. initial MSN to DNP orientation via Zoom). Some of these changes may become permanent—visit the program homepage for up-to-date details.

Curriculum: Online vs. On-Campus
All DNP programs are available on a full-time or part-time schedule. Coursework is delivered online, but some classes will require 1-2 day campus sessions (maximum of 3 intensives per academic year). Ask the DNP Program Coordinator for full details.
- Existing APRNs: The Online DNP-APRN is designed to prepare MSN-holders with current APRN certification for future clinical leadership roles. On a full-time schedule, this program takes 5 semesters to complete and includes a minimum of 26 credits and 540 practicum hours; more credits may be needed if you don’t have certain MSN prerequisites.
- Public Health Master’s Degree Holders: The 30-credit Online DNP-PHN is designed for nurses who hold a master’s degree in Public Health or Community Health (e.g. MPH) and want to prepare for leadership roles in the public health sector. - Aspiring Public Health Experts: The dual Online DNP/MPH is the right fit for nurses who have a master’s degree in a specialty other than public health (e.g. existing APRNs). In this 67-credit program, you’ll earn both an MPH and a DNP. The curriculum includes 765 project practicum hours.
- Aspiring Nurse Executives: The 30-credit Online DNP in Health Systems Leadership trains nurse leaders across the continuum of care (e.g. primary care, acute care, long-term care, etc.). It takes ~6 semesters. Your schedule may be longer if you need to make up additional master’s level prerequisite credits.
- Aspiring Veteran and Military Health Care Leaders: The plan of study for the Online DNP in Veteran and Military Health Care Leadership will depend on your starting degree. If you have a master’s in veteran & military health, you could end up tackling 32 credits over 3 years. If you have a master’s degree in another field (e.g. MSN, MHA, MBA, etc.), your program might expand to 53 credits over 4 years.
Note: CU Anschutz offers Post-Graduate Certificates for any MSN-holders seeking additional certification.
Admissions
General requirements are laid out in the DNP Admission Requirements section. All doctoral candidates must have an accredited BSN, a current & unencumbered RN license, and a minimum 3.0 GPA. But the master’s degree requirement will depend on the program:

- Public Health Master’s Degree Holders: DNP-PHN applicants must have a Master of Public Health (MPH) OR a master’s degree in Community Health in Nursing.

U.S. News & World Report rankings are sturdy, graduate student reviews are excellent, and NIH-funded research projects abound. This is a 34-40 credit program with 600 clinical hours and coursework in areas like Program Planning, Healthcare Systems, Quality & Safety, and more. Part-time (3 years) & full-time (2 years) plans of study are available. The majority of coursework will be online, but core courses meet on-campus once per semester; specialty classes meet up to 2 times per semester.
- Aspiring Nurse Executives: Folks who are interested in running healthcare organizations should examine the pathway in Executive Leadership. This is also a 34-40 credit program with 600 clinical hours. Part-time (3 years) & full-time (2 years) plans of study are available. The majority of coursework will be online, but core courses meet on-campus once per semester; specialty classes meet up to 2 times per semester.
- APRN Certification Seekers: If you’d like to pursue a new or second APRN specialty, you can choose from 5 NP specialties. A standard part-time, 3-year program will include 780-840 clinical hours (direct & indirect)—the total will depend on the track. However, once you’re admitted, UK nursing faculty will perform a gap analysis to determine your current competencies and available credit transfers. NP students are expected to visit the Lexington campus 1-6 days per semester—up to 3 days at the start of the term and up to 3 days at the end.
Note: If Clinical & Executive Leadership students don’t have at least 500 hours of practicum hours from their MSN, they’ll be required to take additional hours to ensure they meet the DNP threshold of 1,000 hours.
Admissions
Online MSN-DNP applicants should have an MSN from a CCNE- or NLN-accredited program, a minimum 3.3 GPA on graduate work, and an active & unencumbered RN license. If you’re applying for the Clinical Leadership pathway, you will also need an APRN license with no restrictions from your home state. The application cycle opens September 15 and closes January 15 for Fall (August) admissions.

JHU’s School of Nursing is one of the “big guns” in nursing. This NLN Center of Excellence can boast of having award-winning faculty, close ties to the JHU Health System, and a powerful alumni network. Aspiring nurse executives should definitely check out the Executive DNP or combo Executive DNP/MBA—the curriculum places a strong emphasis on real-world issues (e.g. patient care technologies, healthcare data, health finance, etc.) and integrated learning. - Existing APRNs & Aspiring Nurse Executives: If you pursue the 40-credit Online Post-Master’s DNP: Executive Track, you’ll be immersed in 6 semesters of online coursework and 4 mandatory campus immersions—three 3-day immersions during the first year and one 1-day symposium event in the second year. This program contains 448 practicum hours.
- MBA Seekers: If you wish to tackle the 66-credit Online Post-Master’s DNP: Executive Track/MBA, you should be prepared for 3 years of study. Because it contains the Executive DNP, you’ll still need to complete 4 campus immersions and 448 practicum hours.
- APRN Certification Seekers: If you’d like to work toward an APRN specialty, you can choose an MSN to DNP pathway in the Online DNP: Advanced Practice. Because the curriculum includes standardized clinicals & course competency assessments, your campus immersions will increase. Talk to the DNP Program Coordinator to learn if any of your existing MSN credits will reduce these requirements.
Admissions
- Existing APRNs & Nurse Leaders: DNP candidates for the Executive Track or the dual Executive/MBA or Executive/MPH should have an MSN, a minimum 3.0 GPA, graduate credits in biostatistics, and RN licensure. MPH and MBA candidates will also need to have 2 years of relevant work experience. GRE scores may not be required—see each admissions section for full details. Apply by January for summer entry.
- APRN Certification Seekers: Post-Master’s DNP applicants to the Advanced Practice program (i.e. APRN specialties) should see the individual specialty page for specific admissions requirements. In general, JHU accepts RNs who have a BSN, a 3.0 GPA, and an RN license from an authorized state. JHU prefers candidates who have 1 year of full-time experience. GRE scores are accepted but not required. Apply by January 1 for a fall start.
Note: All Post-Master’s DNP applicants must have earned a minimum of 552 clinical hours as part of their post-licensure master’s program. If you have fewer than 552 clinical hours or hold an MSN in Nursing Education, you should talk to the DNP Program Coordinator about how you’ll tackle the gap.

Why UMB?
University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) has an outstanding national reputation, helpful links to Baltimore hospitals (e.g. University of Maryland Medical Center), and a whole heap of practical resources at its disposal (e.g. 350+ clinical learning sites). That may be why the Post-Master’s DNP is stacked with so many useful practicums. If you’re out to impress, you can share DNP credits with a Certificate (e.g. Global Health).

This program includes a mandatory campus orientation in the first semester and synchronous (i.e. real-time) online classes 5 days per semester. You’ll also be expected to complete your DNP project and 495 practicum hours at a local site that’s convenient to you. On a full-time schedule, this doctorate would take 2 years (3 years for part-time).
- APRN Certification Seekers: Master’s degree holders who wish to become APRNs can pursue a Hybrid Post-Master’s DNP with Specialty—this program will obviously take more time. Required credits will depend on your transcripts and whether your master’s degree is an MSN or a related degree. You’ll be expected to visit the campus each semester for clinical training in your specialty area—check with the DNP Program Coordinator for details.
Admissions
The DNP begins in the fall of each year; the priority deadline is November 1 of the previous year.
- Existing APRNs & Nurse Leaders: Candidates for the Online Post-Master’s DNP should have an MSN OR a BSN, a master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. MBA, MPA, MPH, etc.), and current experience in an area of advanced nursing practice (e.g. health services leadership management, nursing informatics, public health, etc.). A minimum 3.0 GPA and a current RN license are also required. See the DNP Admission Information section.
- APRN Certification Seekers: Applicants for the Hybrid Post-Master’s DNP with Specialty should examine the admissions details under each APRN specialty. A minimum 3.0 GPA and current RN license are required.

Methodology
To determine the order of schools in our Best Online MSN to DNP rankings, we followed the same methodology as our Best Online BSN to DNP rankings. That means we first considered 4 benchmark statistics:
- Student completion rates
- Graduation rates
- First-time APRN certification pass rates
- U.S. News & World Report placements for DNP programs
For distance learning programs, we incorporated two additional quality factors into our calculations:
- Employment rate one year after DNP graduation—any program with a 95%+ employment rate received an extra boost.
- Average indebtedness of graduates who incurred DNP nursing debt—that means schools with low debt outcomes (e.g. University of Kentucky) can sit alongside high-profile & high-cost universities.
Note: If money is a serious issue for you, we also recommend you take a look at our rankings of the Cheapest Online DNP Programs in the country.
Honorary Hybrid MSN to DNP Mentions
In our rankings, we excluded a number of hybrid Post-Master’s DNP programs that exceeded our “once or twice per semester” requirement. For example, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, MSN to DNP students meet for 3 times per semester. So if you’re in the local area and don’t mind the travel, you might also wish to consider:
- University of Illinois at Chicago | Chicago, IL
- Case Western Reserve University | Cleveland, OH
- The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston | Houston, TX
- University of South Florida | Tampa, FL
- University of Michigan-Ann Arbor | Ann Arbor, MI
- University of Miami | Miami, FL
- Arizona State University | Phoenix, AZ
- Grand Valley State University | Allendale, MI
- California State University-Fullerton | Fullerton, CA
- Fairfield University | Fairfield, CT
What are Online Post-Master’s DNP Programs?
Online Post-Master’s DNP and Online MSN to DNP programs are designed for nurses who already have a master’s degree (e.g. MSN). They will help you earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice in a fairly short time-frame without repeating any work from your master’s degree.
Many programs are designed for MSN graduates. However, some schools will accept DNP applicants who have an RN license and a master’s degree in a related field (e.g. MPH, MHA, etc.). Each school is unique, so check the profiles in our rankings for more details.
Program Structure
In a typical Online Post-Master’s DNP program, you can expect to complete ~30-40 credits of post-master’s study, including graduate-level coursework, practicum hours, and a real-world DNP project.
- Coursework: In Online Post-Master’s DNP programs, the vast majority of coursework is delivered online, either in a synchronous format (real-time) or an asynchronous format (access whenever you like). Occasionally, Colleges might expect you to visit the campus for an initial orientation, your DNP project defense, and/or networking & training weekends. Each type of DNP program will have a different flavor—follow the curriculum links in our rankings for details.
- Practicum Hours: According to the AACN’s Doctoral Essentials, all DNP graduates must earn a minimum of 1,000 practice hours in a post-baccalaureate program. If you already hold an MSN, then you probably have around 500 hours in the bank. That means you’ll need to complete at least 500 hours in the Online Post-Master’s DNP program (e.g. clinical practice hours, mentorship hours, DNP project experience hours, leadership hours, etc.). This number may increase if you have a master’s degree in a non-clinical specialty. You’ll be able to complete practicum hours in your local area. Colleges of Nursing are usually happy to help you analyze your transcripts to determine what’s needed.
- DNP Project: Instead of a traditional thesis, DNP students get to design, implement, and evaluate a practice-based DNP project that impacts healthcare outcomes (e.g. Quality Improvement (QI) project). In an online program, you can work on your DNP project in your local area.
Types of Online Post-Master’s DNP Programs
In our Best Online MSN to DNP rankings, you’ll see a number of titles and concentrations. Each one has a specific audience in mind.
- Online Post-Master’s DNP: This is the standard offering—it’s built for current APRNs and nurse leaders who are seeking upper-level leadership training in both management and clinical issues. So you’ll often see a mix of courses in executive topics (e.g. finance) and “on-the-floor” concerns (e.g. population health).
- Online Post-Master’s DNP: Advanced Practice/APRN/Population Health/Care of Populations: These kinds of DNP programs are usually aimed at current APRNs who would like to focus on clinical leadership (e.g. improving clinical health outcomes for vulnerable populations, leading interprofessional teams in healthcare improvements for targeted populations, etc.).
- Online Post-Master’s DNP: Nurse Executive/Executive Leadership: As the titles suggest, DNPs in these concentrations are custom-made for aspiring nurse executives. The curriculum often contains a lot of coursework in high-level management issues (e.g. finance, healthcare policy, organizational leadership) and modern challenges (e.g. clinical data management).
- Online Post-Master’s DNP: Nursing Informatics: Nursing informaticists use data & technology to improve nursing, healthcare delivery, and patient care. That means the DNP curriculum often contains leadership-focused coursework in data science, information management, application of healthcare technologies, and the like.
- Online Post-Master’s DNP: Dual Degree: If you really want to push the boat out, you can choose to earn two degrees—an additional master’s degree and the DNP! Most universities will combo an Online Post-Master’s DNP with a degree in public health (e.g. MPH) or business (e.g. MBA).
- Online Post-Master’s DNP: Seeking APRN Certification: These kinds of DNP programs are typically aimed at MSN graduates who are eager to earn a new or additional APRN certification. Keep in mind that Colleges of Nursing don’t usually mention this option in the title of a DNP program—instead, they often talk about this pathway in the BSN to DNP sections of their website. For example: “The Online BSN to DNP: Family Nurse Practitioner is also open to MSN graduates who wish to earn FNP certification.”
How to Choose the Best Online Post-Master’s DNP
Let’s say you’ve skimmed through our rankings of Best Online MSN to DNP programs and Most Affordable Online DNP programs and narrowed down your choices to a shortlist of 4-5 options. How do you decide between them? Here are a few practical matters to consider:
- Eligibility: If you’re coming from out-of-state, be sure you’re allowed to apply. You should also take a good hard look at the admissions section to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications (e.g. degree, GPA, licensure, etc.)
- Scheduling: Colleges of Nursing usually offer a part-time plan of study, but you’ll still need to think about your weekly calendar. How much time do you need to set aside for coursework? Are any courses synchronous (you have to be virtually present)? If so, what time zone is the university in? When do practicum hours get introduced? How much time do students spend on the DNP project?
- Relevancy: There’s nothing worse that having to slog through coursework that’s completed unrelated to your professional goals. Does the curriculum match your interests? Do graduates speak highly of the DNP professors? Do examples of recent DNP projects seem relevant? Can you take advantage of research centers? Every online program has a unique personality—find the one that makes your heart sing.
- Budget: Highly ranked and highly regarded schools tend to be expensive—you’re paying for name recognition, resources, and teaching quality. Before you go into debt, explore all your financing options. Do you qualify for in-state tuition or a regional discount (e.g. WGRP)? Does the university offer tuition discounts to employees of healthcare partners? Do you qualify for DNP scholarships?
- Career Opportunities: Many of the top schools in our rankings have close connections to teaching hospitals, major healthcare systems, and nurse-managed clinics. Can you take advantage of those ties? Is there a strong DNP alumni network? Where do recent graduates work?
Online Post-Master’s DNP FAQs
How Long is an Online Post-Master’s DNP?
It depends. In most cases, Online MSN to DNP programs for existing APRNs and nurse leaders can be completed in 1.5-2 years on a full-time schedule (e.g. 4-6 semesters) or 3+ years on a part-time schedule. But this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule—we always recommend you examine the plan of study before you make a decision. If you’re earning APRN certification or pursuing a dual degree (e.g. MPH/DNP), the time commitment will increase.
Do 100% Online Post-Master’s DNPs Exist?
Yes. There are a few universities in our Best Online MSN to DNP rankings that offer 100% online programs, with no campus intensives or orientations. This number may increase in the future—schools have taken many of their intensives online during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, you’ll still need to complete on-the-ground DNP practicum hours.
Do I Have to Worry About State Authorization?
It depends.
- If you’re an existing APRN or aspiring nurse executive applying for a standard Online Post-Master’s DNP program, the answer is usually “No.” Because you already have your qualifications sorted, these kind of DNP programs don’t have any licensing or certification implications.
- If you’re seeking additional APRN certification, state authorization is hugely important. You will need to read the state authorization policy, check with your State Board of Nursing, and double-check with the DNP Program Coordinator to ensure that the degree can be used for certification purposes.
We also want to highlight the fact that—regardless of the program—some schools simply won’t accept Online MSN to DNP candidates from certain states (e.g. Purdue Global). Sometimes this is stated clearly on the admissions page; sometimes it’s buried in the fine print. We’ve tried to flag this issue in our rankings, but it never hurts to email the DNP Program Coordinator if you’re coming from out-of-state.
Can I Pursue an Online Post-Master’s DNP in an APRN Specialty?
Yes. Many universities will allow master’s degree holders to pursue a new or additional APRN specialty in an Online Post-Master’s DNP program. You’ll see these options flagged in the details section of our rankings.
When you apply, the College of Nursing will often conduct a “gap analysis”—they’ll examine your master’s degree transcript and your qualifications to decide how many credits & clinical hours you’ll be able to transfer into the program. If you’re lacking certain key credits (e.g. MSN foundation courses), you may have to take additional prerequisites before you can be enrolled.
Can I Earn an Online Post-Master’s DNP if I Don’t Hold an MSN?
Yes. Many universities are willing to consider non-MSN candidates, especially if you already hold APRN certification (e.g. Frontier) or you’re primarily interested in Executive or Healthcare Leadership programs (e.g. Rush). To make it easier for you to scan through your options, we’ve highlighted this point in the details section of our rankings.
Is an Online Post-Master’s DNP Worth It?
This is a perennial question for nurse leaders and existing APRNs. After all, if you already have a master’s degree and state licensure & certification (APRN or NEA-BC), do you really need to invest tens of thousands of dollars into a doctorate? There’s no right or wrong answer here—it all comes down to your career goals:
- A DNP can be extremely useful if you’re aiming to apply for upper-level management, administrative, or healthcare policy positions.
- It’s also the first choice of nurses who want to qualify for clinical and leadership positions as NPs, executive leaders, medical & health services managers, expert clinicians, and nurse educators.
- An Online Doctor of Nursing Practice may be cheaper and much more convenient than an on-campus version, especially if you wish to continue with full-time work.
When in doubt, talk to your mentors and recent DNP graduates, examine current job listings, and take a look at samples of DNP projects to decide if you’re ready for more academic work!
